Paris was...hmm. That is to say that it's beautiful and extremely interesting...but not a place I'll visit again right away. I like to think that people are basically the same everywhere you go, but sometimes it's the little things that make the difference? I dunno, I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just made some assumptions about Paris before I got there:
Assumption #1: Your French doesn't have to be perfect; it's the thought that counts: Not True. I took three years of French, and my comprehension is much better than my pronunciation. I got called an imbecile more times than I could count by cab drivers and hotel desk clerks. And while it might be true, it's not exactly right to call a customer that. I met very few people who spoke any English, which surprised me because it's a huge city. By the time I left my inner monologue was practically in French.
Assumption #2: The deodorant rumor is not true: Not True. I almost passed out whenever I rode the underground...or went inside a crowded building.

Again, it was beautiful and I understood that I was a guest in their city. Just not as hospitable as England or Italy.

ETA that while I'm not "the ugly American," France might hate me because I molest their statues. That I would understand.

ZOMG I WANT TO GO BACK TO PARIS.

Just not as hospitable as England or Italy.

Hee! I had the exact opposite reaction -- I liked France much more than I did England. But I haven't been to Italy! I need to go to Italy ...

Great pics!

I've spent only a few days in Italy, and I think you'd have a blast there. But man, is it ever hot in the summer. Whew!

Also, if you see a tasty-looking (not alcoholic) drink labelled something like Malta? Just ... don't. :-P

The Italians really are fun. I'd go back, just not in mid-July.

And if your friends dare you to try absinthe...they're not your friends.

Paris is one of my favourite cities! Oddly, my husband went kinda crazy trying to find a place that served mousse and never found a place in the entire city that had it. But we did find it at the restaurant of one of the ch√Ęteau in Loire Valley...

ps - I forgot to mention that when we went, it was not in the height of tourist season (or even close, like when you went) and we were dressed like Germans since we, y'know, lived in Germany. Everyone thought we were German and treated us very well. And as long as we tried to speak French, they were cool about it and usually switched over to English.

I wonder if it was different for you because in summer Americans' clothes and Europeans clothes are very similar (unlike cooler weather, like when I was there) and also because the tourist season is getting underway and people's nerves are a bit more...raw?

Attack of the killer pigeons! Also tiny peens.

ETA: The Davinci Code (the movie) ruined my feelings toward the Louvre forever. :-/

Well, I'm French, I used to live in Paris and I totally understand your reactions. There are a lot of nice people, but the majority of Parisians are full of themselves.
I'd love to live in London but I'd hate to live in Paris again

What part of France do you live in now? And please don't think I have bad feelings toward France in general; I just had a sort of negative experience with Paris and Paris only.

I live in Bordeaux right now but I'd love to live in London. Don't worry, Parisians can be really assholes. They feel like they're better than the rest of humanity. (not all of them, thank god). I used to live there while studying and it wasn't the happiest time ever. I hope your trip in Europe will be wonderful!

Interesting. I lived for five weeks in Paris, back in summer of 1998 (yeah, I'm OLD), and I loved it. I didn't run into smelly people often, despite riding the Metro a lot, and I was treated well with a very few exceptions, most of whom were clearly not French themselves.

I wonder if my age (I was 27 by then) and the way I dressed had something to do with my different experience. I did notice, the first time I went to Europe, that I got treated differently than most of the other people in my tour group because I didn't wear shorts, (garish) t-shirts and sneakers. People couldn't look at me and tell I was American.

I spent only three days in London, and while I loved it, I found the people there more reserved and distant than the French. The language barrier notwithstanding, it was easier to start conversations in France than in England. The Italians, of course, would talk to pretty much anyone; Rome felt more like America than London did, to me.

I think my experience was a mixture of bad luck and me wanting to take outlandish pictures. And I'm definitely willing to try again. :)

Oddly, I found I fit in much more style-wise in Europe than I do here. People in my group even mentioned it to me. There are douchebags in every city; I think I just got unlucky.

That's so cool that you lived there for five weeks! Did you go up to Montmarte and paint or draw?

Pssst...you want to come up to the North of England. We'll happily chat all day about weather, football, traffic, how weird Southerners are and how Andrex toilet paper hasn't been the same since they started producing the quilted stuff.

I remember visiting London for about a week at the beginning of last year and it is like a different country in itself, and I only live 400 miles away.

I must concur with Italy being a friendly place. Everyone I met on my trip to Rome were lovely, the nasty Metro ticket officer being the only fly in what was a delicious ointment. And the ice cream..ZOMG... *dies*

I'm not sure what I love more: The Kilroy-Verb and the Eiffel Tower, Verb hanging with the pigeons, or the Highlander-esque barge. :)

Wonderful pictures! Alas, I have no overseas travel to speak of, and I would really, really love it. *is jealous*

I've been to France but not Paris, I was mostly in the countryside and the beach resort areas. The closest I've been to Paris was the one in Las Vegas, at least people were very polite there.

LOL!

I wish I could have visited the countryside. From the little I saw of it it's absolutely beautiful.
