Title: When We Get There
Rating: PG
Words: 100

He lies awake among the what-nows. His leg throbs, a familiar and constant droning along his spine, reminding him that doing things changes things. Lying here, though, straining his eyes to watch the fan go round, that’s nothing. That’s nothing like cooking is nothing—like chess and reading and bowling are nothing. And that changes nothing. And more nothing means more pain.

He winces, rolling over and checking the clock. 4 AM. An empty bottle of ibuprofen glows green in the numbers’ light. His own voice thumps along with his heartbeat in his ears, What if nothing helps?

What then?

Very nicely done. Very powerful. I think this is exactly were the show is headed, especially if House loses Wilson, just as he lost Cuddy, as a distraction.

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

I think it might be worse for House this time around, because so much of it is not the loss of time with Wilson, but the loss of power and the ability to control his relationship. I think I like Sam, but she'll be tough for House to handle.

I am not sure what to make of Sam yet, but I didn't dislike her as a lot of H/W fans did. She seems genuine for the moment. It will be interesting to see if the writers bother to develop her into an interesting character in her own right or simply leave her as a nemesis for House.

This is great. There's the suspense, the constant fear of a "dark place" as he called it in Epic Fail and most of all the powerlessness that's threatening him. Loved the first line. And I love how this is perfect for where we see him now as well as for the beginning of the season.

Beautiful -- you evoked his feelings so well, especially the uncertainty that isn't just about the pain. Really good!

Here via Mare's rec. This is wonderful, so bleak, searing, and absolutely true.

Wonderfully written.

I'm really starting to dread the season finale and how this Sam/Wilson arc is going to end up. Although I do love how it brings protective!House to my TV screen. :)

You paint with words as well as Mare paints with a brush. I haz word compostion envy. hee

This is really good. You must do more. =D

Personally, I can't help but think that House's leg pain is just an outward symptom of the pain he carries inside. If he were to ever deal with that his leg just might stop hurting.

this is great. something short that encapsulates the rising panic that house must be feeling right now.
