What? A Fanmix? You gots ta be kidding!

Recently I was avoiding writing. More importantly, I was on the hunt for something I could do to avoid writing for long periods of time. There I was, just searching for some groovy tunes to put on the ol' ip-od, when it hit me: using sharing other people's genius to make up for my great lapse in genius.

In all seriousness though, fanmixes are BEAST! I'd like to find the obsessed fan who invented them and give them a gas card and a gift certificate to a day spa or something. They are time-consuming though, and definitely for people who don't suck at photoshop like myself, so go fanmixers!

This particular mix is all over the place in tone and characters and time, and that's because this will be my only attempt at it (lucky you!) But hey, enjoy some dumb teenager music in the meantime...

Kissing The Berlin Wall by Verb

1. Upward Over The Mountain
—Iron and Wine

So may the sunrise bring hope

Where it once was forgotten

Sons are like birds

Flying upward over the mountain”

(Blythe House)

2. We Used To Vacation
—Cold War Kids

I'm just an honest man

providing for me and mine

I give a check to tax deductible charity organizations

two weeks paid vacation, won't heal the damage done

I need another one”

(John House...who was not an alcoholic but had an equally detrimental impact on his son, and there's not many songs about that surprisingly)

3. The Arm—Islands

Now you'll swim until it's deep

Until it feels like you're asleep

Against the sound of warning cries

Which you don't hear

I could not hear

In a lifeless carcass in a bad ass car crash

Hopefully you wake up soon

Hopefully you do

I want you to

That's why the arm came for you”

(The Infarction)

4. The Great Escape
—Patrick Wilson (coincidence? I think not)

Bad day, looking for a way

Oh, looking for the great escape

Gets in his car and drives away

Far from all the things that we are”

(Tritter drama...oh noes)

5. Only The Good Die Young
—Billy Joel

They showed you a statue and told you to pray

They built you a temple and locked you away

But they never told you the price that you pay

For things that you might have done.....

Only the good die young”

(House/Cuddy)

6. Demons
—Guster

I find a need to be the demon

A demon cannot be hurt

Honest is easy

Fiction is where genius lies

Cause it’s easier sometimes

Not to be involved”

(House/Cuddy)

7. The Racing Rats
—Editors

If a plane were to fall from the sky

How big a hole would it leave

In the surface of the earth

Let's pretend we never met

Let's pretend we're on our own

We'll live different lives

Until our cover's blown”

(The Infarction 2!)

8. Stress
—Jim’s Big Ego

I'm addicted to stress that's the way that I get things done

If I'm not under pressure than I sleep to long

And I hang around like a bum.

I think I'm going nowhere

And that makes me nervous.”

(Wilson)

9. This Is Where It Ends
—Barenaked Ladies

I haven't even read everything I've bought

I don't cry every time I bleed,

My eyes are dry, but they're bloodshot

I have faith in medication

I believe in the Prozac nation

You play doctor, but I've lost patience

This is where it ends”

(House/Wilson...is where it's at)

10. Jack and Jill
—Kim Richey

Around and around dancing round the question posed

pick a coin and watch it roll

down into the wishing well

two steps unset there goes another day

another chance to give away

secrets they keep to themselves”

(House/Stacy)

11. The Fly
—Dave Mathews

When i pull the wings off of the fly

the fly never wonders why i did

you know, they didn't ever have to love me

no, no, no and no one will ever love them now”

(Creepy!House)

12.
Anything You Want—Spoon

If there's anything you want

Come on back cause it's all still here

I'll be in the back room drinking my half of the beer

And if you and me is so right

Why's it the same thing every night”

(House/Wilson)

13. Mona Lisa And Mad Hatters
—Elton John

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters

Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers

Turn around and say good morning to the night

For unless they see the sky

But they can't and that is why

They know not if it's dark outside or light”

(House/Wilson/Cuddy)

14. The Fallen
—Franz Ferdinand

Some say you're trouble, boy

Just because you like to destroy

All the things that bring the idiots joy

Well, what's wrong with a little destruction?”

(House)

15. Boy With A Coin
—Iron and Wine

A boy with a coin he found in the weeds

With bullets and pages of trade magazines

Close to a car that flipped on the turn

When God left the ground to circle the world”

(Wilson/Amber)

16. Something To Talk About
—Badly Drawn Boy

I've been dreaming

All the things I've learned about a boy

Who's bleeding

Celebrate to elevate

The joy is not the same without the pain”

(House/Wilson)

17. How It Ends
—DeVotchKa

There is no escape

From the slave catcher’s songs

For all of the loved ones gone

Forever’s not so long

And in your soul

They poked a million holes

But you never let them show

Come on its time to go

And you already know

Yet you already know

How this will end”

(House)

And here's the download link. Feel free to yell at me if this doesn't work because I'm severely techtarded. Also, feel free to bash my taste in music. My folks do it all the time.

The sad thing is that I've only heard of 4 of the artists -- Billy Joel, Elton John, Barenaked Ladies and the guy who was in Half-Wit.

Never mind that - I've only ever heard 1 or 2 of the artists in the multiple fanmixes I've snagged ... ever.

Great fanmix!

I've got both of you beat...lol

When I make fanmixes I have to google lyrics/quotes, then listen to the songs on youtube b/c 9x out of 10 I've never heard the song and then I'll decide if the song actually applies to the pairing. If not it's back to the googling board.

So yeah I agree w/ you VK fanmixes are a pain in the mitka... but I do think the results offer an interesting perspective on the author and pairing. And your choices were pretty unique and off the wall---much love.

Thanks, I'm really glad you liked it.

I totally agree with you about the obscure artist thing. I feel like some people who do fanmixes literally think of THE most underground/indie/look at me I'm so misunderstood artists to put in their mixes, which isn't really enthralling when most of the singers are guys in their bathtubs with acoustic guitars. That, and using Damian Rice or Ryan Adams were the only things I tried to avoid.

These bands all have a pretty large fan following. I mean, I wouldn't be considered weird for liking any of them at my high school, so I figured some people would know them. Or not lol.

My not knowing them is not an obscurity thing -- it's an age thing.

It's so cool to use a quote from a Franz Ferdinand song for your 'compilation!
Great taste for a sixteen-year-old!
